I’m pretty sure that I’ve been fascinated by stairs in some way or another for all of my life. I can remember visiting my grandparents’ home in North Carolina and I swear that I don’t even think that they would’ve needed cable or Nintendo to keep my occupied because I always was playing in their staircase. I would slide down the banister, play with toys on the steps, and crawl underneath the motion sensor to try to make it upstairs without turning on the light (Yep, I’ve always pretty much been this special!) Nowadays, I’m pretty much over my staircase infatuation, but I still love the beauty of a well-designed set of stairs.
As I’ve said before, I can totally appreciate all types of different styles, from traditional to ultra-contemporary and stair designs are no exception. One of my favorite designs for stairs, regardless of the style of the home, is a spiral staircase. There’s just something interesting about them that has always captured my attention.
I used to always want one in my future home; that is until I spent a week with my BFF in Germany at her dad’s two-story apartment. The apartment was a very cool, modern space with a spiral staircase leading to an open loft upstairs where my friend and I spent a lot of time hanging out. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that I hit the back of my ankle on those stairs probably multiple times per day. They were beautiful stairs but they definitely had a vendetta against me and were out for blood!
After the hateful stairs incident I feel like my spiral staircase aspirations faded away, but like all beautiful designs, sometimes they’re more fashion than function and (most of the time) that’s perfectly okay with me! Whether you’re looking for ideas for your own stairs or are like me and just like to admire from a safe distance, here are some of my favorite spiral staircase designs. Please note: ankle-high boots for protection not included!
