As a lover of colorful interiors and worldly décor, it’s only natural to be attracted to the vibrant and detailed aesthetic that Moroccan design has to offer. I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right – sometimes Moroccan does get a little too “genie in a bottle” to live with and look at day after day.
Today designers from all over have taken what they love about this inspiring worldly style and toned it down, bringing a modern Moroccan design aesthetic for homes that belong in magazines, not a bazaar.
To achieve a more modern approach to Moroccan, I think that you need to pick which element you’d like to stand out as being “Moroccan”. Will you have beautiful mosaic tile backsplashes? What about Moroccan trellis print wallpaper? Ornate lanterns and tiled bathtubs are also great ways to showcase this unmistakable global influence.
I’ve always been a fan of mosaic tile, so I think my favorite modern Moroccan looks would have to be kitchens and bathrooms. There are just so many opportunities in these areas of the home to wow your guests (and yourself!) over and over again, from backsplashes to showers, baths and floors.
Another visually appealing element to modern Moroccan design today would be the use of a decorative screen. I’ve seen these used in everything from built-in cabinetry and windows, to room dividers and front doors.
Of course this brings me to my last modern Moroccan staple: the hanging lantern. Today you can put them on the ground or suspend them from the ceiling and both options will add a chic Moroccan flair to your interior. Even if you’re not crazy about this style, they cast a really amazing shadow when you have a candle or light bulb shining from the inside. Fashion + Function!
