Ever since Pinterest and 1stDibs came into my life as sources of inspiration to seek out before considering a new furniture purchase. I feel like there are a ton of great modern or vintage pieces out there just looking for the right buyer to snatch them up and cherish them in their homes forever. Unfortunately, buying original mid-century modern classics or state-of-the-art contemporary home furnishings may be just slightly (okay, totally!) out of my price range. I may have been told once or twice that I have expensive taste, especially when it comes to new additions for the home.
I’ve always noticed a ton of fabulous mid-century modern furnishings on sites like 1stDibs and eBay, which piqued my interest into the history and background of each piece. After reading through the descriptions under each of the products, I quickly came to realize that perhaps my most favorite pieces were made with lucite. Half-glam, half-modern and 100 percent acrylic, these pieces remain popular and command a hefty penny due to age and material quality. Some of my most favorite furniture items are vintage lucite bar carts, as well as larger items like etageres and poster beds.
Luckily for folks like me who are into stylish furniture and decor for their homes, there are quite a few manufacturers out there (CB2, Zuo Modern, and Jonathan Adler, for instance) who are well known for their higher-end acrylic pieces. The great thing about those larger brands selling these great looking transparent pieces is that they can mass produce them (albeit in most cases lower quality) just like their older lucite counterparts. Regardless of age or cost, I’m pretty sure that I’ll forever be a fan of the simple beauty and modern aesthetic of acrylic and lucite home furnishings!
