I think that there is nothing more beautiful or romantic than an ivy or flowering vine-covered façade. Something about the nature overtaking a structure looks so powerful and just makes any building look a thousand times better. I can remember exploring little villages in the south of France and just thinking how amazing the narrow alleys of homes and buildings looked with pink and purple bougainvillea overtaking the area.
On that same trip to France, I ate at a restaurant that was covered inside and out with these plants and it made for a really unique dining experience. Usually the OCD germophobe freak inside of me would take over and wonder if serving food in an atmosphere covered in flowers and vegetation was a good idea but the service was outstanding and I honestly can’t think of a more beautiful dinner that I’ve had in my life.
Bougainvillea plants are super easy to grow due to the fact that they love direct sunlight, can survive in poor quality soil and really do not need too much water. I think that if I owned a house with a backyard, I would definitely love to line a fence with these beautiful plants in hopes that they would climb and spread. Natural barriers are always more pleasant to look that in my opinion than a wood or chain link fence. Here are a few of my favorite exteriors that incorporate this unforgettably pretty plant.
