that your choice of accessories can make or break your bathroom design.”
So Jane Austen might have begun her best known novel, Pride and Prejudice, had she been writing in the current century. We’re a house proud lot, us Brits, and for some of us interior design is almost as central to our lives as the pursuit of a man of means was for women in Austen’s day. Interiors are fascinating: the way you can mould a space to meet your exacting standards, drawing admiring glances from your house guests…. and while I love a wedding as much as the next person, ‘making a prudent match’ just doesn’t sound that exciting.
So, how to make a bathroom that’s truly yours – defined by your personal tastes alone, perfect in every way…. but without spending budget-busting sums in the process? I’m glad you asked.
It’s back to one of my favourite topics – bathroom accessories. They’re essential for most bathrooms: you need a towel rail, toilet roll holder, robe hook, soap dispenser and bathroom shelf for practical purposes – but also because if you pick the right accessories you can turn even the plainest, most uniform bathroom suite around into something special. It’s a little like the way a pair of glitzy, glam earrings can lift an all black outfit you’ve been working in all day to something worthy of a trip to a nice bar in the evening. Bathroom accessories are to a plain bathroom suite what nice jewellery is to an everyday outfit.
In fact, the plainer your bathroom suite, the better. A fancy, detailed bathroom suite might not look quite right when you change from your original set of accessories – but simple, fuss-free bathroom suites can be paired with many different designs. So, whether you like traditional or modern styles, coordinated sets of accessories or eclectic mixtures, knock yourself out!
And the best part? When you’re bored, just ditch those old accessories. Accessories are easy to remove without spoiling the whole bathroom, so when they’ve served their purpose they can be either recycled or sold (a good option if you like vintage style, as vintage items can fetch as much on resale as you paid for them in the first place) – and you get to try out a whole new look…
